Once in a 100 years

2011.04.06. 13:00

We live in or pass by them every day: we should treasure Budapest's invaluable architectural heritage, just as a couple of enthusiastic architects from OSA (Open Society Archives) and from the Hungarian Contemporary Architecture Centre do it with their "Budapest100" project. On April 9 and 10 (the latter the 100th day of the year) around 150 of the century-old buildings open their doors for sneak-peek kind of visits and to host concerts, mini-exhibitions, tenants' reunions, gardenings etc.

My sibling (and sibling's Significant Other) participates in the events at their building which was built, obviously, in 1911. They show the views from the rooftop and they deliver some coctail food as well (PhD-s are welcome too).

Oh moments when I'm proud to be a Budapest resident (sob-sob)! I mean, really, I know this city still keeps dust from the early 50's, and I'm aware of it's lack of ostentatious skyscrapers, and everything else from the revolting public transportation to the streetworks left unfinished I'm too tired to list here, but hey, just look at the buildings all along Nagykörút or the whole inner city!

I remember my grandpa's second wife's second husband, american (gringo, to specify) from head to toe, coming to Budapest for the first time and asking of every single house we passed by whether it was a museum. So there must be place in this city for new architectural concepts indeed but it shouldn't be a silly idea either to lean the future of town-planning on existing traditions.
