Due south

Some Southern Italian feeling for you to cheer up.

I loved almost everything there. Certainly wouldn't be able to pick just one thing. I bet Napolitanos could, and I'm thinking now of all that garbage piled up all along the streets (Italians have mastered the Art of Strike), but for (st)rangers who happen to spend just a couple of weeks in the city it's not embarrassing at all. Surprisingly enough, even gringo tourists seem to enjoy Campania undisturbed by the distinctive chaos.

Then again the massive herds of gringos who pop out to Capri from their cruises for a one-day intensive tour could be pretty embarrassing. No offense, it's just that I spent there several days and had the opportunity to experience the striking difference between Capri by day  and by night: every inch of road blocked by conglomerated rubbernecks vs ten minutes of walk on the narrow alleys without anyone in sight.

Anyway, I got Naples and Capri under my skin, that's why I've returned there for a second visit this year (and the reason to claim a proper mediterranean seashore for Hungary. Needless to say, with an island included. And some ruins and such from the age of the roman empire.)

A second part of the summer trip was to Southern France, the Provence. Keyword is food, but I was also impressed by how professional the French are marketing themselves and bringing out the best from the tiniest insignificant detail: like the benches of the roads painted in shiny white or keeping the local traditions on what colour to paint on their houses (seaside-pastels or terracotta only). They have what most of the hungarian villages are in lack of: character.

Finally, what I found interesting in Côte d'Azur.

This post comes accompanied by this year's trip's signature song, Riviera Life by Caro Emerald & Giuliano Palma. I heard it everywhere from the hotel's own music station to the cheapest pizzeria and it's very catchy. I couldn't get it out of my head for two weeks, so be careful.
